Biography
Stephanie Chen, pianist, was recently awarded the 2009 Prix for composition interpretation and the prestigious Prix Casadesus for musical excellence at The Ecole d’art Americaines de Fontainebleau in France. Among her various concert venues, Ms. Chen has performed in Salle des Colonnes of the Chateau de Fontainebleau as part of the Fontainebleau Festival in 2009, Holley Hall and the Sarasota Opera House as part of the artist showcase concerts of the Sarasota Music Festival in 2009, The Long Center as guest performer for the 2009 Texas Medal of the Arts Ceremony, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall as part of the 2007 Bradshaw and Buono International Piano Competition’s winner’s recital series, venues throughout Corpus Christi by invitation of the Chopin Society of Texas, Harris Concert Hall as part of the Spotlight Recital series at the Aspen Music Festival in 2007, and the Lila Cockrell Theater in San Antonio as soloist with the Texas Honor Orchestra in 2006.
In addition to these formal public performances, Ms. Chen is actively involved in the community and performs regularly in public facilities such as hospitals and nursing homes, through The Juilliard School’s Gluck Community Service Fellowship program. Chen also performs frequently on Juilliard's Wednesdays at One performance series, in Alice Tully Hall and at the New York Society for Ethical Culture. Moreover, she was recently invited by the Asian American Cultural Center to perform at The Long Center as part of a benefit for the non-profit organization Meals on Wheels.
In December of 2009, Chen was invited as a semifinalist in the Wideman Piano Competition, and was awarded the Van Grigsby Johnston Memorial Award. Among Chen’s musical awards, Chen has appeared on NPR’s From the Top program, collaborating with Christopher O’Riley and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra on Francis Poulenc’s Concerto for Two Pianos, was named a Davidson Fellow in 2006 in recognition of excellence by the Davidson Institute for Talent Development, the Grand Prize Winner and First Place Winner of the 4th Young Musician’s Festival, awarded first place in the 14th Chopin International Piano Competition by the Frederic Chopin Society of Texas, and Third Place in the prestigious Kingsville International Isabel Scionti Piano Solo Competition in 2005.
On top of Ms. Chen's success in competitions and awards, she has also appeared as a soloist with several different orchestras. She made her orchestral debut at age nine, performing Mozart’s Concerto No. 23 in A Major with the Austin Civic Orchestra. Since then, she has also performed with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Plano Symphony, and five times with the Austin Symphony Orchestra.
Summer music programs have included The American Conservatory at Fontainebleau, Sarasota Music Festival, Pianofest, and the Aspen Music Festival. In addition, Chen participated in The Juilliard School’s Chamberfest in 2008 and 2009, an intensive one-week chamber music festival.
Chen has had the opportunity to work with such world-famous performers and instructors including Richard Goode, Joseph Kalichstein, Claude Frank, Robert Levin, Yoheved Kaplinsky, Nelita True, Ursula Oppens, Roger Muraro, Philippe Entremont, Joan Havill, Julian Martin, John Perry, Natalya Antonova, William Race, Dariusz Pawlas, Paul Badura-Skoda, Nancy Garrett, and Danielle Martin through master classes.
Ms. Chen is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance at The Juilliard School, where she studies with Jerome Lowenthal. Past significant teachers include Anton Nel and Susan Groves.
